Konkan is the coastal belt of the western state of Maharashtra
in India .The Konkan coast borders Panaji city of Goa to the North and Kasargod
of Kerala in the South. The Konkan Coast is known for its rich vegetation,
exquisite beaches, and delicious food, palm and coconut trees. Konkan is famous
for mangoes (ratnagiri amba), jackfruit ,nuts etc… Konkani Language the
original settlers of Konkan region were Brahmins who predominantly lived along
the banks of the river Saraswati. However, not all of the cuisine is hot and
spicy. The 'Konkanastha Brahmin' style of food is quite bland yet very tasty
and vegetarian too. Mainly Konkan is famous for Fish and Beaches. Konkani food
is very spicy and made with Coconut and many masalas. Many masalas have dried
red chilies and other spices like coriander seeds, peppercorns, cumin,
cardamom, ginger, garlic, etc. Some dishes also use kokum, dried kokum (amsul),
tamarind, and raw mango (kairi).The Malvani masala, a form of dried powder
masala is a concoction of 15 to 16 dry spices. In konkan there are many types
of bakris like rice bakri, jowar, bhajri, etc. kombidi vada is the famous cuisine
of the Konkani people. There is a special drink after a lunch / dinner made
with coconut milk and kokum fruit known as sol kadhi. This drink is usually
taken after the hot and spicy food. Whenever we think about non-vegetable in our
mind firstly comes malvani or Konkani food of Maharashtrians.
